Biochar as an adsorbent has proven its potential in the last few decades. They have been beneficial for numerous applications in global warming mitigation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental pollution mitigation. It has been profoundly used in wastewater treatment as a sorbent material for trace metal removal and pharmaceuticals. Our research focus is more into the modification of the pristine biochar for selective adsorption of organic and inorganic contaminant. We also provide solutions for metal recovery from electronic wastes, industrial sludge using hydrometallurgy treatment techniques combined with phytoremediation.

R. M. Viraj Niroshana Gunarathne

Viraj completed his B.Sc. degree in Botany from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and currently reads the M.Sc. in Environmental Science at Post Graduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya. His current research aims on industrial sludge treatment via acid leaching, biochar amendment and phytoremediation.
