Workshop on Financial Matters Related to Research Grants

A workshop on Financial Matters Related to Research Grants was held at the premises of the International Center for Multidisciplinary Studies (ICMS) on 18th July 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the objective of strengthening the understanding and management of grant-related financial procedures among the faculty’s researchers and research assistants.

The workshop was organized under the guidance and vision of Prof. Sunethra Thennakoon, Director of the ICMS, as part of the Centre’s ongoing commitment to enhancing research capacity and promoting the effective administration of university funded research projects. The workshop was attended by all research assistants attached to the 2024 and 2026 research grant projects. In addition, several Principal Investigators (PIs) also participated in the session.

The workshop was organized with the participation of the invited resource person, Mrs. Dhammika Galkaduwa, Deputy Bursar of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and her expertise and guidance supported the participants in clarifying key financial aspects associated with research grant implementation, budgeting, and proper utilization of allocated funds.

During the meeting, several key financial topics were discussed, including proper management of research grant funds, following financial rules and institutional procedures, and maintaining correct documentation for all expenses. The importance of being transparent and accountable when reporting financial activities was also highlighted.

The resource person discussed the common challenges researchers encounter in managing research grant funds and provided clear guidance and practical recommendations to strengthen financial management practices. The session covered key aspects of grant administration, including the appropriate utilization of allocated funds, eligible and ineligible expenditures, financial accountability, and the preparation of financial reports in accordance with funding requirements.

Participants were actively encouraged to raise questions and seek clarification on issues related to financial management. This interactive discussion enabled participants to address their concerns regarding the proper use of grant funds, permissible expenditure categories, and reporting procedures. The question-and-answer session significantly enhanced participants’ understanding of financial management requirements and promoted greater confidence in effectively administering research grants. The discussion also highlighted the importance of proper financial planning throughout all stages of the research process. It was stressed that funds should be used carefully and in a planned way to achieve the research goals effectively.

In addition, participants were reminded to keep accurate financial records and submit interim financial reports on time in order to avoid delays in administration. The role of research assistants was also emphasized, as they help in daily financial monitoring and maintaining proper documentation, which ultimately supports better and more efficient project management.

Overall, the meeting was a useful platform for improving participants’ understanding of how to manage research grant finances and for strengthening compliance with institutional financial rules. The guidance shared by Mrs. Dhammika Galkaduwawas highly appreciated, and the active participation of researchers made the discussion more productive and engaging.
